As a sociologist and a geographer, I study cities, redevelopment, and the uses of culture, space, and history in re-making neighbourhoods and landscapes. I have a particular interest in how ideas, ideals, and ideologies become part of the built environment, and with what effects for shaping social possibilities. I am also concerned with empires, aviation, and middle classes -- sometimes connected to each other, sometimes not, but always in thinking about their relationship with the urban setting.
