I am an educationalist, with a PhD in Sociology from the UCL Institute of Education. My PhD thesis ‘Space and Politics in the Penguins’ movement: geographies of the political construction of the Chilean student movement’ involved cross-disciplinary qualitative research that sought to develop a theoretically rich and methodologically innovative sociological examination of the socio-spatial constitution of the Chilean student movement. My scholarly work on political sociology has involved a thorough examination from an interdisciplinary perspective of the rise of social movements and new forms of grassroots urban radical democratic politics in the Global South. I have extensively researched new forms of popular grassroots radical democratic politics through which social movements are reinventing the practice and theory of politics within contexts of post-democratic transitions and neoliberal reforms.
