Member Profiles

Gabriel Silvestre is a lecturer in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at the University of Sheffield. He is currently the director of the MA Cities and Global Development, an interdisciplinary programme that examines urban development and planning challenges faced by governments and populations in the global South. His research focuses on the core themes of urban politics, uneven spatial development, and postcolonial planning theory. His recent work examined the governance and social impact of mega-projects in Latin America with a particular focus on the set of urban development projects associated with the hosting of the 2016 Olympic Games in the city of Rio de Janeiro. He holds a PhD in Planning Studies from University College London and has previously worked in local authority and central government agencies in the UK.
