I am a PhD student in the Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies, University College London. My research explores the various spatial tensions in cultural representations of Patagonia from 1520 to the present day. In this project, I use diverse media such as film, literature, art, and cartography to trace the roots of contemporary depictions of barrenness and desolation back through the Spanish colonial period. My most recent work has been focused on Spanish imperial cartography, and how it portrays a dubious colonial presence in the region. My research interests include theories of space and landscape, colonial Latin America, travel writing, environmental humanities, the history of cartography, and the relationship between cartography and cinema. My work is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council London Arts and Humanities Project.
